Braided rivers are a precious and iconic part of the region’s landscape. Environment Canterbury is prioritising their protection and restoration, as healthy ecosystems will better withstand climate stress.
Human activities, as well as the invasion of weeds and predators, means that braided rivers and their bird species, plants, native fish and insects are under threat.
